Driving Tips From Grampa

Book and Bio Sketch

Book

“Driving Tips from Grampa” is a logical story of a retired driving instructor who enthusiastically becomes a mentor to his precious grandchildren and their friends, teaching them safe driving principles.  Within the thirteen short, interesting chapters of informative and humorous dialog in “Driving Tips from Grampa”, Gerry Stewart, who is Grampa, leads young, inquisitive minds to a safe plateau in driving habits.  Grampa uses common sense to introduce crucial safe concepts and proven safe driving methods acquired through his experience and knowledge that ring true.

The primary goal is to get students to recognize and focus on driving conditions and situations before they become problems.  Using logic and common sense, the alert driver should be able to negate potential problems.  Grampa calls this heads-up driving.  These types of drivers stand out and are easily noted by their smooth, seemingly effortless and safe movements through city traffic, freeways and parking lots.  They are called in the industry proactive drivers.  Drivers who are aware of what is happening in the present and take corrective action now to prevent an accident in the future.

When driving, don’t be found dead . . . even if you are dead right.  Be prepared to yield 100% . . . 100% of the time.  Think smart, be smart and set a positive example for others to follow.  Read “Driving Tips from Grampa”.

BIO

Gerry Stewart, author of  “Driving Tips from Grampa”, the youngest of seven children, was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  His father Joseph, died when Gerry turned four and the family moved to Ottawa, Ontario.  Gerry completed his high school education in Kapuskasing, Ontario, with support of his oldest sister, Kay.  Returning to Ottawa at the age of nineteen, Gerry married his sweetheart, Joan Gow, and became a driving instructor, teaching for many years.  Gerry Stewart also worked for the telephone company driving many miles in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, on snowy and icy roads, sometimes through freezing rain, to repair equipment in satellite offices.

Gerry and Joan moved to Vancouver, Canada, where they raised four children, Gerry, Joe, Marianne and Mark and started a real estate and notary public office.  Later Gerry and Joan relocated in Grand Forks, Canada, and opened Grand Forks Driving School, where they remained until Gerry turned sixty and retired.  With seven grandchildren, and with forty-seven years of marriage behind them, Gerry and Joan moved back to Vancouver, Canada, to be with family.

By writing this book, Gerry, with the thoughtful intelligent help of Joan, are trying to make this world a little better and safer place to be.

I wish “Driving Tips from Grampa” had been around when our kids were learning to drive.  Gerry Stewart knows his way around the adolescent mind, and his lighthearted yet serious look at safe-driving skills puts the focus, not only on common-sense rules of the road, but on the attitude needed to make them work. A great gift for teenagers and it wouldn’t do the rest of us any harm to read it too.

I really enjoyed the book, learned a few things myself.  I like the way Grampa is able to instruct his students without appearing to lecture.   The repeated emphasis on ‘be aware of situations and make advance decisions’ is a skill we all need to keep updated and not just on the road!
